Lulu’s Music Studio is pleased to offer interested students the opportunity to participate in The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Certificate Program.
The RCM Certificate Program provides a structured, internationally recognized approach to music education and assessment. Students progress through a series of levels and have the opportunity to demonstrate their development through formal examinations.
Participation in RCM examinations is completely optional. Your Lulu’s teacher may recommend the program if they believe it would be a positive and motivating goal for your student.
What Is an RCM Exam?
An RCM practical examination is an individual assessment with a professional RCM examiner. Rather than competing against other students, each student is evaluated according to the requirements and standards established for their particular level.
Depending on the instrument and level, preparation may include:
Prepared repertoire
Technical requirements such as scales, chords, and arpeggios
Ear training
Sight reading
Musicianship skills
Music theory requirements at applicable levels
Students receive an examination result and professional feedback that can help teachers and families understand their progress and identify areas for continued development. Lulu’s Music Studio also gives them a personalized trophy with their name and level achieved so they can always cherish that accomplishment.

Is RCM Right for My Child?
If your child practices regularly and is motivated by goals and challenge, yes! If your teacher believes RCM would be a good fit, they will discuss the appropriate level, repertoire, preparation process, and examination timeline with you.
RCM is not for brand new beginners, it may take about a year of lessons until your child is ready to start preparing for the exam and using the materials. Preparation takes about a year or more depending on the level to be achieved.
In-Person & Remote Examination Options
RCM offers both traditional in-person examinations and remote examination opportunities for many disciplines and levels.
Remote practical examinations allow eligible students to complete their assessment from an appropriate location, including their home or music studio, with an RCM examiner evaluating the student remotely.
Your teacher can help determine which examination format is appropriate for your student.
