Sonata-Sonatina Festival

Hello!

Lulu’s Music Studio is pleased to offer interested piano students the opportunity to participate in the annual North Shore Music Teachers Association (NSMTA) Sonata-Sonatina Festival.

The festival gives students the opportunity to prepare and perform a sonata or sonatina and receive an evaluation from a panel of professional adjudicators.

Participation is completely optional. Your Lulu’s teacher may recommend the festival if they believe it would provide a positive and motivating performance goal for your student.

What Is the Sonata-Sonatina Festival?

The Sonata-Sonatina Festival is an annual adjudicated performance event for piano students.

Students prepare eligible sonata or sonatina repertoire and perform it from memory for professional adjudicators. Each student receives written feedback and a participation ribbon.

Students can also earn medals based on their adjudication score:

Gold Medal: 96–100

Silver Medal: 93–95

Bronze Medal: 90–92

Students earning a Gold Medal are invited to perform in the Gold Medal Winners Recital the following weekend.

Why Participate?

Preparing for the Sonata-Sonatina Festival gives students a specific musical goal to work toward while developing important performance and practice skills.

For many students, preparing for the festival can help develop:

Performance confidence

Stronger practice habits

Musical expression and interpretation

Memorization skills

Technical development

Experience performing for professional adjudicators

Motivation from working toward a specific goal

Unlike a traditional recital, students also receive an independent professional evaluation of their performance.

Is the Festival Right for My Child?

The Sonata-Sonatina Festival can be a great opportunity for students who enjoy performing, respond well to having a specific goal, or are ready for an additional musical challenge.

Your teacher will determine whether the festival is appropriate based on your student’s current level, repertoire, and readiness.

Because the festival has specific repertoire and memorization requirements, students should speak with their teacher well in advance so there is enough time to select and properly prepare their music.

pertoire requirements and exclusions established by NSMTA.

Dates: February each year. Please contact us for specific dates.
